Higher wattage applications require large resistors to dissipate the heat they generate. Large tubular substrates offer a large surface area to apply resistive materials and are very robust. These large resistors require the use of mounting hardware and are not attached directly to a PCB board. Multiple technologies can be applied to the substrates, such as wirewound and thick film.
